"People who choose spiritual direction do so because they want to pay closer attention to their relationship with God
...Typical spiritual direction questions are "Where is God in this?" or "Where has God gone and why don't I sense any divine presence at all?" or "How am I being called to be Christlike?"
- Jeannette A. Bakke, Holy Invitations
Spiritual direction provides a quiet space where we can slow down and tune in to God's presence. In sessions, we notice what is happening in life and where God is in it. An important focus of spiritual direction is prayer - how is the conversation flowing between the directee and God? The direction session often begins with listening carefully to a passage of scripture.
"In spiritual direction, two people...experience God drawing them together precisely to pay attention to love, the prayer of God unfolding in the heart of the person seeking spiritual direction. This prayer of God, really God's yearning for the person, has long been prayed before the person comes for spiritual direction." - Rose Mary Dougherty, Group Spiritual Direction
Spiritual direction addresses problems in the Christian life: doubt, difficult passages in the Bible, besetting sins, and those times when God seems to have packed up and left. Sitting in the Lord's presence while another person prays silently can help us get 'unstuck'; it can help us tune in to Him and hear His invitation.
